That doesn’t require spectacle, a massive budget, or a conventional path. It requires a strong idea, committed people, and a story that still matters after the credits roll.
False Canonical Films exists to help make those stories possible.
Independent by design.
Independent filmmaking demands more than creativity. It requires resourcefulness, adaptability, and a willingness to find another route when the expected one doesn’t work.
That suits us.
We approach each production as its own problem to solve rather than forcing every project through the same process. The goal is simple: protect what matters on screen while finding practical ways to get it made.
Why “False Canonical”?
In technical terms, a canonical version is the one designated as authoritative, the version everyone is told to treat as the real one.
But authoritative and true are not always the same thing.
History gets simplified. Institutions protect their preferred version. Repetition hardens assumptions into accepted fact. Sometimes the official story is incomplete. Sometimes it is convenient. Sometimes it is simply wrong.
A false canonical is what happens when the version everyone accepts as definitive isn’t actually the truth.
That felt like a fitting name for a film company.
Stories give us a way to look again, to question what has been settled, examine what was left out, and explore the space between the accepted version and what may actually have happened.
Because the accepted version isn’t always the true one.
